Filter Cleaning or Backwashing
| You will have
one of 3 types of filters: Sand, Cartridge, and Diatomaceous
Earth (DE) Each will have to be cleaned on a regular basis
depending on how dirty the filter becomes over time. The pool
filter manufacturer has put a pressure gauge on the filters to
indicate the current pressure. The trick is to get the "clean"
or starting pressure initially, and when the pressure increase
you would then clean or backwash the filter. Typically 10 psi
difference is a good indicator it is time to clean or back
wash your filter. You should consult your owners manual for
proper instructions. |

Sand Filter |

Sand filters have a dial head on the
top of the filter. Always switch off the pump before moving the
valve. Make sure your backwash hose is unrolled completely or you
will burst it. Move the valve handle from the Filter to the
Backwash Position with some it is a push/pull operation & some a
rotate operation. Restart the pump & let the water flow in reverse
through the filter until the water at the end of the backwash
hose, or the site glass, is clear. This is about 3 to 5
minutes. Switch off the pump & move the valve to the RINSE
position for 30 seconds to clear the filter & then switch off the
pump & move the valve to the FILTER position. Switch on the pump &
allow it to operate as normal. |

Cartridge Filter |
A cartridge filter is a filter that
collects debris in it's pleats. You will have up to 4 filters in
the filter's tank and each of those filters will have to be
removed and hosed of periodically. This is called a "Quick Clean"
It is recommended at the end of the season that you do a "Deep
Clean". You remove the cartridges and soak them a Filter
Cleaning Solution such as Filter Free, for 24 hours and
then rinse them off. This "Deep Clean" loosens the set in
oils and debris that couldn't be removed with a "Quick Clean". At
Oasis we offer a "Deep Clean" cartridge cleaning service
and you can contact us for info.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) |
These filters have a set of pads
inside which must be coated with the DE. The DE is the filter & it
removes the dirt from the water passing through. When the dirt
builds up to a point that it reduces the flow of water, the DE &
its dirt must be removed. Some filters have a valve which allows
you to reverse the flow through the filter to remove the DE &
dirt. This works on some but not all.
In most cases you will need to remove the lid of the filter tank &
take out the pads & give them a good hose down. In many cases you
can use the reverse flush method normally & then each six months
or so remove the pads for a good clean.
After you replace the pads & refit the lid, you will need to start
the pump & add more DE through the skimmer box. |
